TSECL issues public advisory amid rising cyber fraud cases in Tripura

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has issued an urgent public advisory following a rise in cyber fraud cases involving the misuse of the corporation’s identity. This alert comes in response to a growing number of reports from consumers who have fallen prey to deceptive messages and fraudulent phone calls.
According to TSECL, scammers have been targeting electricity users across the state by impersonating TSECL officials. These fraudsters claim that consumers have pending electricity bills and pressure them to make immediate payments or download malicious mobile applications. Often disguised as official services, these applications are designed to steal sensitive information such as banking credentials.
One of the most alarming incidents was recently reported from the Jogendranagar area of Agartala. A family that uses solar power under the PM Suryaghar Yojana received a message claiming to be from TSECL. The message instructed them to download an app to access their electricity bill. Trusting the source, the family followed the instructions and subsequently suffered significant financial losses due to the exposure of their personal data.
In response, TSECL strongly condemned these fraudulent acts and clarified that it does not use unofficial numbers or ask consumers to install unknown apps. The corporation emphasized that its only official app is BidyutBandhu, available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It also reminded consumers that official TSECL messages are sent from verified sender IDs such as “TSECLI.”
To combat these threats, TSECL issued a comprehensive consumer advisory. Key safety tips include avoiding suspicious links or messages on SMS, WhatsApp, or email, refraining from downloading APK files from untrusted sources, and never sharing OTPs or banking details with unverified callers. Fraudsters often request small payments as "reconnection charges" or "pending dues" to lure users into installing harmful apps.
TSECL urges anyone who suspects fraud or receives such messages to report the matter immediately to the nearest police station, contact the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at [www.cybercrime.gov.in](http://www.cybercrime.gov.in), or call the cyber fraud helpline at 1930.
“We are deeply concerned about these developments and remain committed to safeguarding the interests of our consumers,” said a TSECL spokesperson. “Public awareness is our strongest defence. We encourage everyone to stay alert and rely only on our verified platforms for any electricity-related services.”
In addition to the advisory, TSECL plans to intensify its public outreach through awareness campaigns and close coordination with law enforcement agencies. As cybercriminals continue to develop new strategies, the corporation aims to ensure that citizens are well-informed and better protected against digital threats.
