The award was presented to Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson and Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dr Satya Ramaswamy at a ceremony in London organised by FlightGlobal in partnership with global management consulting firm Korn Ferry.
The Airline Strategy Awards are among the aviation industry's most prestigious annual honours, recognising leadership and excellence across select categories. Winners are chosen by an independent panel of industry experts, including analysts, consultants and former airline CEOs. Air India is the sole recipient of the Digital Leadership award this year, following previous winners such as United Airlines and Ryanair.
The award recognises Air India's technology-led transformation since its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022. The airline has undertaken a comprehensive digital overhaul, leveraging emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to modernise operations, improve customer experience and strengthen organisational capabilities.
Campbell Wilson said the recognition reflects the airline's rapid progress and the commitment of its employees to the transformation journey.
"We are honoured to receive the prestigious Airline Strategy Award for Digital Leadership from FlightGlobal. This recognition is a testament to the progress Air India has made since its return to the Tata Group and reaffirms the commitment of Air Indians driving our transformation journey. Our digital initiatives are playing a key role in enhancing customer experience, empowering our employees, and driving operational excellence. It is a proud moment for all of us to have the scale, speed and impact of our digital journey recognised by one of the aviation industry's most respected institutions," he said.
Dr Satya Ramaswamy said digital technologies and AI have become foundational to modern airline operations.
"Starting with just a handful of systems, we have built an extensive digital ecosystem comprising more than 140 enterprise systems since Air India's return to the Tata Group. Our customers now benefit from world-class digital channels, including our award-winning mobile app, while our employees are supported by advanced enterprise platforms. We are grateful that FlightGlobal has recognised the scale and speed of Air India's digital transformation," he said.
Key milestones of Air India's digital transformation
Since 2022, Air India has achieved several major milestones as part of its technology-led reinvention:
Built a cloud-first digital ecosystem comprising more than 140 enterprise systems in about two years—significantly faster than the industry average of over a decade for transformations of similar scale.
Launched modern customer-facing digital platforms, including a redesigned website, mobile applications, notification systems, an AI-powered virtual assistant and upgraded inflight entertainment. Air India's mobile app has been downloaded more than 17 million times and holds a 4.8-star rating on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in India.
Developed advanced data and analytics platforms to support data-driven decision-making and improve customer service across operations, including through crew iPads used during flights.
Digitised employee workflows by introducing dedicated applications and paperless systems for pilots, cabin crew, engineers and ground staff, improving operational efficiency and employee experience.
Successfully integrated the technology platforms of Air India and the erstwhile Vistara in less than a year—one of the fastest full-service airline mergers in aviation history—bringing together over 140 systems, 10 million loyalty members, nearly 300 aircraft, and more than 30,000 employees.
Became the first airline globally to deploy a Generative AI-powered virtual assistant (AI.g) in May 2023. Since its launch, the platform has handled over 26 million customer queries with a reported 97 per cent containment rate. The airline is also developing more than 30 agentic AI initiatives across its operations as part of its long-term digital strategy.
