Afghanistan: More than 600 die in Kunar earthquake, Modi extends support 

Over 600 people died, and more than 1,000 others were injured after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Kunar province in Afghanistan, a region that was hit by a flash flood last week.

The Taliban government has put the total number of deaths due to the quake in Kunar at 622, reported BBC. The fresh 10 bodies were recovered from Nangarhar.

The quake has left 1500 people injured.

The details about the incident are still not known, and the complete death toll will be clear as time progresses.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban government, also stated last night that local officials must use all their resources to rescue the people, reporetd Tolo News.

As per the U.S. Geological Survey website, hit the area at 23:47 local time.

The quake struck at a depth of 8kms.

The epicentre of the quake was located 27km away from Jalalabad, one of the most populous cities in the Taliban-ruled nation.

Roads blocked due to landslides

With roads blocked by landslides, the police in Kunar province told BBC that rescue operations can only be carried out by air

Meanwhile, the Taliban government has urged urgent help from international aid organisations to meet the immediate challenges.

According to reports, medical staff have reached the province by helicopter to treat those affected by the quake.

On October 7, 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit the South Asian country. It was followed by strong aftershocks.
At least 4,000 people died in the quake.

Narendra Modi expresses sadness over earthquake

Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the loss of lives in the earthquake.

Modi wrote on X: "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured."

He said India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected by the quake.
