CMRI Kolkata performs complex surgery to save patient with pancreatic cancer history
In a remarkable demonstration of medical expertise, CMRI Kolkata has successfully performed a highly intricate surgery on a patient of 72 years with a history of pancreatic cancer and hernia.
This clinical achievement which involved addressing complex medical challenges with precision and care was led by Dr. Ajay Mandal, GI & Hepato-Biliary Surgeon
The patient, a cancer survivor, had previously undergone hernia repair surgery outside CMRI, involving the placement of a surgical mesh. After a while the mesh began to erode, causing immense pain and resulting in the development of Gastrointestinal Fistula—a life-threatening condition where abnormal connections form between the intestines and other organs.
The patient’s condition had reached a critical stage, requiring immediate expert intervention to alleviate the complications when brought to the hospital. This patient has undergone surgery three times to restore her normal GI continuity.
The case presented significant challenges. Removing the eroded mesh without causing further damage to the surrounding tissues demanded surgical precision. Additionally, repairing the gastrointestinal fistula required meticulous planning and execution to restore normal intestinal function while ensuring the patient’s overall stability.

Under the guidance of Dr. Ajay Mandal, the team at CMRI Kolkata executed a carefully planned surgical procedure. The eroded mesh was successfully removed, and the damaged intestines were repaired with precision. This complex surgery was a testament to CMRI’s advanced capabilities in handling rare and high-risk conditions, emphasizing their patient-first approach to healthcare.
Post-surgery, the patient has shown remarkable improvement. Free from the debilitating pain and complications caused by the gastrointestinal fistula, they are now on the path to recovery. This success story not only underscores CMRI Kolkata’s expertise but also highlights the dedication of its medical team to delivering exceptional outcomes, even in the most challenging scenarios, said the hospital.
"Everyone lost hope, even doctors. But the patient's belief and trust and confidence over the surgeon made them more confident as they took the final call and finally succeeded. This achievement stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration in the healthcare community, showcasing how innovation and skilled professionals can transform lives and set new standards in patient care," said a CMRI official.
