Magnitude 3.0 earthquake felt across New York, no casualty
An earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter Scale hit New York on Saturday, with no casualties reported due to the tremor that shook the American city.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website, the epicentre of the quake was located in the northeast of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
There have not been reports of injuries or of structural damage, Jonathan Tytell, a geophysicist at the USGS, told NBC News.
The earthquake hit at a preliminary depth of 10 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the NYC Emergency Management directed people to be alert about aftershocks.
In an X post, the agency said: "A 3.0 magnitude earthquake was reported at 10:17 PM near Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. Some New Yorkers may have felt it. At this time, no damage has been reported to NYC Emergency Management. Con Edison, National Grid, PSEG, MTA, NYPD, FDNY, DOT, DOB, and NYC 311 have all reported no impacts related to this event."
"There are no known issues reported to NYCEM affecting utility services, transportation systems, traffic flow, or structural stability across the city. Operations continue as normal. While later reports or developments could change the picture, the event appears to have had minimal impact. Aftershocks sometimes follow earthquakes, but no additional seismic activity has been reported so far," the agency said.
Warning people to abe alert over aftershocks, the agency further said: "But should an aftershock take place, be ready to act. If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under something sturdy, and hold on until the shaking stops."
Describing the earthquake, USGS website said, "The August 3, 2025 (August 2 local time), M 3.0 earthquake near Hasbrouk Heights, New Jersey, occurred as a result of faulting at shallow depths in the crust. Although this event did not occur near a plate boundary, such “intraplate” earthquakes can and do occur."
The Empire State Building confirmed to the people of the city that it survived the quake.
It was written on X: "I AM FINE."
