Atishi resigns as Delhi Chief Minister a day after AAP suffers massive defeat in Assembly polls
Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Sunday resigned as Delhi Chief Minister, a day after her party suffered a massive defeat in the Assembly polls with Bharatiya Janata Party returning to power in the national capital after 27 years.

She submitted her resignation to Lt Governor VK Saxena.
The Raj Niwas' official X page wrote: "Hon’ble Lt Governor, Shri VK Saxena today received the resignation of Hon’ble CM, Ms Atishi. He asked her to continue in her position till the formation of the new government."

Atishi submitted her resignation just a day after the AAP suffered a crushing defeat in the polls, ending the political outfit's decade-old rule in the national capital.
She became the Chief Minister of the national capital in September last year after Arvind Kejriwal quit the position following his release from prison on bail in the liquor policy scam.
Despite her party's poor show in the polls, Atishi won the Kalkaji seat by beating BJP's Ramesh Biduri, marking the only silver lining for the political outfit amid its dismal performance for the first time in the Delhi Assembly polls.
The AAP won just 22 seats this time in comparison to 62 seats clinched in Delhi in 2020.
Top AAP leaders, including chief Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia, lost their seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power by winning 48 seats in the first major elections in the country since the 2024 general polls which marked the return of the saffron brigade for the third straight term.
Congress fails to open account
The Congress failed to win a single seat in Delhi.
Meanwhile, accepting the defeat, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote on X: "We humbly accept the mandate of Delhi."

"Heartfelt thanks to all the Congress workers of the state for their dedication and all the voters for their support," he said.
He further said: "This fight for the progress of Delhi and the rights of Delhiites – against pollution, inflation and corruption – will continue."
The Congress bagged an unflattering hat-trick of getting zero seats in three elections in 2015, 2020, and 2025.
The AAP and the Congress had contested last year's Lok Sabha election in an alliance but fought the Delhi elections separately.
The BJP swept all seven parliamentary seats in the national capital.
Owing to local rivalries, the former allies could not reach an agreement for the capital contest.
