'Bengal people have right to peaceful living': Guv CV Ananda Bose in strict message after fresh Rishra violence

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday sent out a strong message promising an action on part of the law enforcement agencies after visiting Rishra in the Hooghly district which witnessed fresh violence last night.

After reports of fresh violence broke out, Bose trimmed his north Bengal trip, reached ground zero, held meetings with the police officials and interacted with the residents of Rishra.

Speaking to the media, the Governor said, "There will be solid action from the part of all law enforcement agencies. We will never allow the miscreants, the hooligans and the goons to take the law into their hands. The police will come down heavily on them."

"These dark and evil forces will be brought to book. People of Bengal have a right to peaceful living and that right will be established," he added.

The violence, which broke out a day after the clash between two groups over Hindu festival Ram Navami, prompted the police to impose Section 144 and snap the internet connection in the area.

Railway properties were targeted by the mob and train services were affected, reports said.

Howrah and Hooghly, the two neighbouring districts of Kolkata, were on the boil over the Ram Navami processions carried by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Two groups clashed, several vehicles were set on fire and public properties destroyed in Howrah last Thursday.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the BJP for allegedly changing the procession route and creating violence, something which has been trashed by the saffron camp.

West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari accused the governing Trinamool Congress of using riots to consolidate the "minority votes" post the party's defeat in Muslim-dominated Sagardighi bypoll.

Violence broke out in Hooghly on Sunday over the procession.

BJP MLA Biman Ghosh was among the injured.
