Centre directs CBI to probe Manipur horror video, wants trial outside state

New Delhi/IBNS: The Union Home Ministry has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the horror video from Manipur that showed two women being paraded naked by a mob, media reports said.

According to reports, the government also wants to run the trial outside the northeastern state, which has been witnessing violence for the last three months. An affidavit will be filed on this.

The video from Manipur, which became viral ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, continues to create massive ruckus in both houses with the opposition demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over it.

When it was made clear that PM Modi would not give a statement on the same, the opposition moved a no-confidence motion against the government that has been accepted by Speaker Om Birla.

Opposition leaders said they are well aware that the government enjoys majority in the house but the aim of the motion, they said, was to compel the Prime Minister to speak on the Manipur issue.

The Centre's plea would be that now the PM's presence has been secured by way of the no-confidence motion, a discussion on Manipur should take place in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah would respond.

The government's current move of entrusting the CBI with the case is seen as an effort to combat the huge public outrage in Manipur, a BJP-ruled state.

The violence in Manipur has even drawn global attention with the European Parliament adopting a resolution on the human rights situation in India, with particular reference to the recent clashes in Manipur.

The Indian foreign ministry has, however, called the Manipur issue as an "internal matter" stating that the European Parliament's move reflects a "colonial mindset" and is "unacceptable".
