The protest was organised in solidarity with the party’s recently arrested co-conveners and founders, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.

Participants also raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Supporters began arriving at the venue after 10 am amid a heavy police presence near the gates. Protesters carried the national flag, portraits of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and placards criticising the administration.

Low turnout marks CJP demonstration

Attendance remained limited during the morning, with small groups gathering at Azad Maidan.

The crowd grew during speeches before numbers fell again in the afternoon.

Books and party literature were spread across sheets on the ground for supporters and passers-by to browse.

Speakers criticised the administration over the arrests of Ranka and Das and urged people to become more aware of the SIR exercise.

The demonstration ended at around 5 pm.

CJP says protests will continue

Rupali Kudtarkar, a CJP member, said the party would continue its demonstrations until its demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation was met.

“We will keep protesting each day until Gyanesh Kumar resigns,” Kudtarkar said.

She also claimed that the party had initially planned to stage the demonstration at the Gateway of India, but police directed the protesters to continue at Azad Maidan.

“We had planned to organise the protest at the Gateway of India, but the police insisted we continue the protest at Azad Maidan. We were allowed to take a photo at the gateway later in the evening,” she added.

The Mumbai demonstration was part of CJP’s wider protest campaign following the arrests of its leaders and its objections to the SIR exercise.
