G4 nations press for UNSC reforms, Jaishankar attends meeting
The foreign ministers of the G4 nations—India, Japan, Germany, and Brazil—called for urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council amid rising instability in the international order.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, was attended by India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, and Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the G4 ministers stressed that “amid increasing instability in the international order and with the UN—the center of multilateralism—increasingly incapable of fulfilling its role, it is crucial to reform the Security Council at the earliest to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities, thereby enhancing its representativeness, legitimacy, effectiveness, and efficiency.”
The ministers highlighted the need to expand the Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent membership categories and to increase the participation of developing countries and those significantly contributing to international peace and security. They also emphasized improving representation for underrepresented regions, including Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
The G4 ministers reaffirmed their support for the Common African Position as outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
