Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Trikand visits Italy
Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Trikand, called at Taranto, Italy, on September 28, during her ongoing operational deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.

During the visit, the ship’s crew engaged in professional exchanges and cross-deck visits.
These interactions focused on sharing best practices and enhancing mutual interoperability between the two navies.
"Captain Sachin Kulkarni, Commanding Officer of INS Trikand, paid a courtesy call on Rear Admiral Andrea Petroni, Commander of the Italian Navy’s Second Naval Division," read a government statement.
The port call underscores the importance attached by India to its relations with Italy and reflects the shared commitment of both nations to strengthening their growing defence cooperation and maritime partnership.
The ship has now proceeded to the next phase of deployment.
The
Indian Army has a unique historical connection with Italy. It played a significant role in the advances of the Allied forces for the liberation of Italy in the Second World War. Out of the 20 Victoria Crosses awarded for the Italian Campaign, six were to Indians. 5,782 Indian soldiers were killed in action, read the Indian Embassy in Italy website.
They are honoured in 40 Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries spread all over Italy.
The defence relationship has expanded to dialogue, service-to-service interactions, training, export of defence equipment, sharing information, port calls, naval exercises, maritime security, etc.
The Italian Navy Ship (ITS Morosini) made a port call in Mumbai in August, 2023. Indian Navy Ship INS Sumedha held PASSEX with ITS Morosini off the coast of Sardinia in April, 2023.
The Italian Navy also participated in MILAN Naval Exercises in Vishakapatnam in February, 2024.
Italy’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG), consisting of Italian Aircraft Carrier ITS Cavour made a Port Call in Goa in October 2024 and held joint exercises with the Indian Navy.
A Defence Industry Forum was held. Italian Offshore Patrol Vessel ITS Vespucci visited in Mumbai from 28 November-02 December, 2024 as part of its tour to the Indo-Pacific and for interactions with Indian military counterparts.
The Italian Navy Frigate Antonio Marceglia made a Port Call in Mumbai from 26 May to 1 June 2025.
