The incident occurred in the city's commercial hub, hours before a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was set to commence.

Initial reports suggested multiple injuries from a shooting; however, police later confirmed that the attacker was armed only with a knife.

According to their statement, the "terrorist" approached a restaurant on Levontin Street and stabbed a civilian before being shot and "neutralised" by an armed bystander.

The term "terrorist" is commonly used by Israeli police to describe Palestinians who carry out politically motivated attacks.

Emergency service provider Magen David Adom treated a 30-year-old male at the scene for severe stab wounds before transporting him to the hospital. The attack occurred around 4:30 pm local time (1430 GMT).

This incident adds to ongoing tensions, with the Gaza ceasefire aimed at pausing hostilities between Israel and Hamas, following over 15 months of conflict.
