Jadavpur University horror: Police arrest four more accused in undergraduate student's death
Kolkata: Police have arrested four more accused in connection with the death of a first-year student in Kolkata's Jadavpur student last week.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose summoned the JU officials later on Wednesday at his Raj Bhavan office, official sources told UNI.
During its raids, three former students of the university were among the four accused arrested on Tuesday night by the Kolkata Police.
The police earlier arrested a 2022 passed-out student and two 2nd year students in connection with the death of the 18-year-old undergraduate student, who allegedly fell fatally from the hostel's 2nd floor on August 9 and succumbed at a hospital the following morning.
The JU currently has no Vice-Chancellor after former VC Suranjan Das resigned in March last owing to his discontent regarding the lack of a security system at the large campus, whose gates remain open 24 hours.
After Das' exit, Professor Amitava Dutta was appointed ad-hoc VC, but he too quit on August 4 and the mysterious death happened a week later, allegedly in intensive ragging by the seniors.
Meanwhile, Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, on Wednesday summoned JU's Dean of Students Rajat Roy and Registrar Sneho Manju Bose at 3 PM.
Kolkata Police have taken cognisance of JU's students' social media posts, including photographs, which indicated that there were elements of sexual harassment in the ragging of the student.
Jadavpur Anti-Ragging Panel has submitted a report on the student's death to University Regulator, UGC.
The victim allegedly fell from the second-floor of the main hostel around 11:45 pm on Wednesday and died while undergoing treatment at the KPC hospital early on Thursday.
The UGC officials, which sought a report from the JU, are expected to send a team to probe the death, also on Wednesday, sources said.
