New Delhi/UNI: The National Union of Journalists (NUJI) on Tuesday said that it will hold a protest march on Wednesday against the arrest of Republic Bangla reporter Santu Pan in Bengal's Sandeshkhali.

The march will be organised from Jantar Mantar to Banga Bhawan in Delhi on Wednesday, the NUJI said in a statement.

The NUJI and the Delhi Journalists Association held a meeting over the arrest of a Bangla journalist.

In the meeting, it was said that the media is being strangled by imposing an undeclared emergency in West Bengal, the NUJI said.

Demanding the immediate release of the journalist, the organisations have demanded that journalists should be allowed to work freely in the state.

NUJI President Ras Bihari said, “On one hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given free rein to criminals and on the other hand, journalists who expose hooliganism are being jailed.

“Media persons are being continuously attacked by supporters of the ruling party Trinamool Congress in Bengal,” he said adding that a three-member delegation of NUJI will visit Bengal and prepare a detailed report on the attacks and harassment on journalists and submit it to the Centre.

In the meeting, senior member Ashok Kinkar, former Press Council member Anand Rana, former NUJI treasurer Seema Kiran, Sansad TV journalist and former DJA President Manoj Verma, Ashok Barthwal and many other journalists presented their views.
