Nitish Kumar apologises for his controversial remark on population control

Patna/IBNS: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday apologised after his remark on popular control triggered a massive row and widespread condemnation.


Speaking to the media, Nitish said, "I apologise if my words have hurt anyone. If my remark has triggered condemnation, I apologise and take back my words."

Nitish on Tuesday vividly described how a woman, if educated, can restrain her husband during sexual intercourse.

The Chief Minister said this stressing on the importance of education among women.

The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed Nitish for his remark which it called "misogynistic, vulgar and patriarchal".

Backing Nitish, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said, "The remark should not be misinterpreted. The Chief Minister's statement was about sex education. People get hesitant whenever the topic of sex education is raised.

"These things are taught in schools. Science, Biology are taught in schools. Children learn them. He spoke about the practical way to control population rise. His statement should not be taken in a wrong manner but more as a sex education."

Slamming the Chief Minister National Commission of Women Rekha Sharma said, "Yesterday's statement of Bihar CM was derogatory, we are deeply concerned with this...The way he spoke was like a C Grade movie dialogue in the Assembly in front of women and the worst was the men sitting behind him were laughing."

Rekha Sharma has urged the Assembly Speaker to "expunge" the statements.
