This was the first conversation between both leaders since US President Donald Trump's inauguration last week.
Trump began his second term with a flurry of executive actions aimed at overhauling US immigration, and the H1-B visas that allow companies to hire foreigners and bring them to the US with specific skills.
Prioritising New Delhi, US secretary of state Marco Rubio on Tuesday held his inaugural bilateral meeting with India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar after taking charge.
Jaishankar even said that India is prepared to take back its citizens residing illegally in the United States after the meeting.
