Punjab’s battle against drone drug trafficking: Pakistan’s alarming role

By IBNS
Oct 30, 2023..

Punjab is currently facing a significant challenge – the infiltration of drones and drugs into its territory.

Recent incidents have once again shed light on the pervasive issue of drug trafficking in the state, with suspicions pointing towards Pakistan as a likely source.

In a joint operation conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Punjab Police, two significant seizures were made within a span of just two days, further raising concerns about the relentless drug trade via drones.

On October 28, in Ferozepur, Punjab, BSF troops intercepted a suspected drone near Gatti Mattar village, successfully recovering two packets of contraband items weighing approximately 1.630 kilograms, believed to be heroin.

The recovery was a testament to the vigilance and cooperation between the BSF and local law enforcement.

Similarly, on October 29, another incident took place in Amritsar, Punjab, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The BSF recovered a China-made drone from the outskirts of Bhaini village. In this operation, the drone was found to be in a fully damaged state, along with one packet of suspected heroin weighing 2.146 kilograms, wrapped in blue polythene.

The recovered drone was identified as a Quadcopter, a DJI Mavic 3 Classic model, manufactured in China.

These consecutive incidents underscore a growing pattern of drone usage in smuggling narcotics into Punjab, posing a considerable threat to the region’s safety and security.

The Border Security Force and Punjab Police have been proactive in their efforts to combat this menace.

Their prompt response to the presence of suspected drones and coordinated search operations have resulted in multiple successful interceptions.

These achievements are a testament to the dedication of the security forces in Punjab who are working tirelessly to protect the state from the pernicious effects of drug trafficking.

The involvement of drones in drug smuggling is an evolving trend, and it requires innovative countermeasures to detect and intercept these aerial threats effectively.

The recovery of China-made drones in these recent incidents raises concerns about their origin and potential involvement of external elements.

Intelligence reports have consistently pointed to the involvement of Pakistan-based drug cartels in orchestrating the drone-assisted smuggling operations.

These cartels, with the assistance of local facilitators, have been using Punjab as a transit point for their illicit drug trade.

The situation has far-reaching implications, not only for the state’s security but also for the health and well-being of its residents, as drug addiction continues to be a prevalent issue.

Efforts to curb the drone menace are ongoing. Technological advancements and enhanced surveillance methods are being explored to better identify, track, and neutralize rogue drones. Additionally, there is an urgent need for international cooperation to tackle this cross-border issue effectively.
