SAIL provides 4k tonnes of steel for 'Vindhyagiri' frigate in defense commitment

By IBNS
Aug 17, 2023..

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has demonstrated its commitment to national defense by supplying 4,000 tonnes of special steel for India's indigenous sixth frigate ship, named "Vindhyagiri."

The special steel includes special rolled plates, comes from the New Plate Mill of the Rourkela Steel Plant.

The "Vindhyagiri" frigate is a part of Project P17A, an initiative by the Indian Navy, and is being constructed by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

The launch of the frigate is scheduled for August 17, 2023, and it is a significant step in the Project P17A, which aims to build a total of seven ships. This launch marks the successful construction of the sixth ship under this project.

The steel supplied by the Rourkela Steel Plant for the "Vindhyagiri" frigate consists of DMR 249 A grade Hot Rolled Sheets and Plates. This steel is crucial for the construction and integrity of the frigate.

SAIL's involvement in the ambitious Project P17A highlights the company's dedication to fostering indigenous growth and innovation in India's defense sector. This effort follows SAIL's notable contribution to the commissioning of INS Vikrant, an aircraft carrier that holds immense pride for the nation.

SAIL had supplied the entire 30,000 tonnes of specialty steel required for the construction of INS Vikrant.

Overall, SAIL's contributions to these projects underscore its commitment to supporting India's defense capabilities and promoting domestic advancements in the defense sector.
