Sikh New York State Trooper barred from growing beard, Indian Embassy responds
New York/IBNS: The Indian Embassy has come out with a response after a Sikh New York State Trooper was barred from growing a beard, media reports said.
New York State Trooper Charanjot Tiwana was barred after he sought permission to grow a beard for his wedding in March last year.
Tiwana's request was turned down citing beard would pose a safety risk if he is required to wear a safety mask.
India's Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has taken up the matter with the senior level of the Joe Biden administration.
David Weprin, who represents Queens in the New York State Assembly, has reacted to the incident saying as quoted by various media, "Quite frankly, I am appalled by these discriminatory practices and clear violation of state law."
New York State Police administration has said as quoted by various media, "We have recently updated our guidelines with respect to facial hair... The New York State Police Uniform and Equipment Committee is currently working on a policy for the design and issuance of turbans."
