Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returns 10 bills days after SC expressed concern over delays

Chennai: The disagreements between Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and the ruling MK Stalin-led DMK government surfaced once again on Thursday as the former returned ten pending bills to the Assembly without his approval, media reported.

Two of these bills were passed by the earlier AIADMK government.

This comes under the shadow of the Supreme Court’s admonishment following complaints against Ravi and his Punjab counterpart about the delays in clearing the bills.

NDTV reported citing the state law department that the Tamil Nadu governor returned the bills and the state government will send them back to him right away to force Ravi to ratify the bills.

A special session of the Assembly has been called by Speaker M Appavu (on Saturday) in which it is expected the bills will be sent back to Ravi as it would then become mandatory for him to approve the bills so they become laws.

The DMK has accused that the governor’s actions were "undermining the will of the people" by intentionally delaying bills.

The bills that await approval include one that restricts the governor's power to appoint vice chancellors for state-run universities, and another proposing the prosecution of former ministers from the AIADMK.

Ravi previously returned the NEET Exemption Bill after much delay, submitting it to the President of India only after the Assembly reapproved the bill.
