Manipur CM N Biren Singh resigns before Governor

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh submitted his resignation to the Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla sending shockwaves to the people of the state, mainly the Meeteis, but for the Kukis who have been demanding his removal from the Chief Minister ship is a moment of rejoice.

Biren submitted his resignation to the Governor on late afternoon of Sunday, after arriving from Delhi with BJP In-Charge Manipur Sambit Patra. After his arrival to Imphal, Biren held an emergency meeting with his cabinet colleagues and BJP MLAs and other party MLAs who support him. After the meeting, Biren along with cabinet colleagues and MLAs directly went to Raj Bhawan and submitted his resignation to the Governor Ajay.

Biren’s drastic action to resign came in the heat of the current ethnic crisis, dissent among BJP MLAs who want his removal, lingering No Confidence Motion by Congress in the upcoming State Assembly session which is set to begin on 10th of this month and the case at Supreme Court regarding the viral audio clip of him on the current ethnic crisis.

Sources also tells that Biren took the step to resign, after Union Home Minister Amit Shah advice him to do so to bring peace. In the face of the crisis the 10 Kuki MLAs has been demanding Biren’s removal from being a Chief Minister and separate administration.

According to reports, despite Biren’s resignation as Chief Minister, the Manipur Governor had asked Biren to continue serving at the caretaker CM until a new member of the state assembly is chossen as CM and a new government takes charge.

Before his resignation, Biren who had flown to Delhi on Saturday night had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Union Minister’s official residence in New Delhi on early Sunday afternoon.

In the resignation letter he submitted to the Governor said "I, Nongthombam Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, am submitting my resignation herewith. It has been an honor to serve the people of Manipur thus far".

He further said that he is extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri. He also requested the Central government through the governor's good office to continue with the same.

"I take the opportunity to enumerate the most important ones of them; to maintain the territorial integrity of Manipur which has a rich and diverse civilizational history over thousands of years. To crack down on border infiltration and to formulate policy for the deportation of the illegal immigrants. To continue the fight against drugs and narco terrorism. To continue the stringent and fool-r proof revised mechanism of FMR with the biometric being stringently applied. Time bound and faster border which is underway".

Finaly he said, kindly, accept my resignation and oblige. After Biren’s resignation, there is no clear cut information on who will be the next Chief Minister of the state. However, sources say that Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata is likely to be the chosen as the next CM. However, reports is that Minister Khemchand, Minister Govindas, MLA Radheshyam are also in the list for consideration.

Chosing the next CM will be a difficult task as BJP being the majority in the state assembly election and the division among BJP and other party MLAs. Coming days is crucial for the state as, who the next CM will be, a Biren’s aid or from the groups of those who had been revolting, or a neutral one whom the BJP and other party MLAs and Kuki MLAs are willing to support.
