Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, has officially confirmed that development on a second instalment is underway.
“We are really excited about the progress we’re making with respect to a second ‘Michael’ film,” said Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate’s Head of Film, in an interview with Variety. “All the conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well.”
Fogelson added that the creative team has a wealth of material still to explore. “There is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson story, and much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalog were not touched upon in the first film,” he said. “There are so many other events that happened, even within the time frame of the original movie that weren’t included. We’re very confident we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will once again appeal to a global audience as the pieces come together.”
The first film concluded during the era of Jackson’s 1987 Bad tour, leaving significant chapters of his life and career yet to be depicted on screen.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, Michael stars Jaafar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s nephew—in the titular role. The ensemble cast also includes Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
The biopic has grossed more than $700 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest box office successes of 2026.
