After West Indies defeat, Phil Salt urges ‘expressive’ England in must-win Scotland clash
Kolkata/IBNS: A narrow win over Nepal followed by a 30-run drubbing at the hands of the West Indies cricket team has forced England cricket team to reassess their approach as they gear up for a crucial clash against Scotland cricket team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Harry Brook-led England, comfortably beaten by the West Indies earlier this week, now face neighbours Scotland, who head into the contest on the back of a convincing win over Italy.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Kolkata, England batter Phil Salt admitted the team needs to show more intent and personality on the field.
Reflecting on the loss to the West Indies, the wicketkeeper-batter said: “The main takeaway from that game was that we played a bit tentatively. Going forward, we need to play with personality and express ourselves. When we have to make a decision, we must take the positive option with our chest out and put a stamp on the game. If we want to go deep into this World Cup, we have to do exactly that.”
“That’s definitely my mindset and the direction we’re going to take. We’re going to throw everything at the coming games,” he added.
Despite the setback against the table-toppers, Salt sounded optimistic about England’s chances in the remaining fixtures against Scotland and tournament debutants Italy.
“We’re feeling positive at the moment. The competition is still in front of us. Two big games are coming up, but we’re confident about bringing our best versions in each match,” the 29-year-old, who played here for KKR in IPL, said.
Historic Neighbours, Rare Rivals
England and Scotland share a deep political history, but cricket meetings between the two have been limited.
In head-to-head ODIs, the teams have met five times — three wins for England and two for Scotland. Their only T20 encounter in 2018 was washed out due to rain.
Scotland Banking on Familiar Conditions
Scotland, who entered the tournament following Bangladesh’s exit, have played both their matches at Eden Gardens.
After losing their opener to the West Indies, the Scots bounced back strongly with a win over Italy to stay second in Group C.
Scotland pacer Brad Wheal believes familiarity with conditions could offer an edge.
“This is our third game here, so it’s a great opportunity for us. We’ve had time to understand the conditions and pitches, which has been a great help.”
However, Wheal acknowledged England’s experience in Indian conditions, with several players having featured in the IPL at the same venue.
“England have a few players who’ve played here in the IPL and have more experience in India than many of our players,” the 29-year-old admitted.
The England–Scotland clash begins at 3 pm (local time) on Saturday.
