Nagpur/IBNS: Washington Sundar picked seven wickets alone to lead India's charge against New Zealand, leaving the visitors to crumble on the first day of second Test in Pune on Thursday.

New Zealand were bowled out for 259, thanks to Sundar's 7 for 59.

Ravichandran Ashwin, the other spin bowler and an icon, picked three wickets to offer a setback to New Zealand, who won the toss and elected to bat first in the morning.

Devon Conway, who was one of three casualties of Ashwin, slammed 76 from 141 balls while Rachin Ravindra scored 65 from 105 balls.

After the dismissals of Conway and Ravindra at 138 and 197 respectively, New Zealand needed a short period of time to collapse, shedding the dream to post a high total.

In reply, India played the remaining overs of the day carefully, scoring only 16 but that did not save skipper Rohit Sharma's big wicket.

Rohit was bowled out by veteran Tim Southee for zero.

Young and exciting talent Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten at 6 from 25 balls while Shubman Gill kept hanging at 10 from 32 balls when curtains fell on the first day's play.

New Zealand are ahead of India 1-0 in the three-match Test series,
