The Assembly of Journalists (AoJ), one of Tripura’s major journalists’ and media workers organizations, has strongly condemned the alleged death threats issued against senior journalist Manas Pal on social media and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
According to a press statement issued by the organization on Thursday , an individual identified as Joyti Chakma allegedly issued an open death threat against Manas Pal following the publication of a report on social media. The organization has expressed serious concern over the incident and called for immediate police intervention.
Manas Pal is a well-known name in Tripura’s media fraternity, particularly for his work in investigative crime journalism. For nearly three decades, he has been writing on social media about various issues concerning banned militant organizations in the state and their leaders.
Recently, Pal reportedly highlighted the history of a gang-rape case, widely known as the Raishyabari gang-rape case, allegedly involving an NLFT militant led by Haflong Jamatia. The incident reportedly triggered anger among certain individuals, who subsequently threatened the journalist with death on social media.
The AoJ stated that the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the alleged perpetrators were available on social media. It urged the police to take suo-motu cognisance of the matter, register a case and initiate appropriate legal action against those involved.
The organization also demanded adequate security for Manas Pal to ensure his safety. It called upon the state Home Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to intervene promptly and take necessary steps in the matter.
Warning of further action, the AoJ said that, if required, it would bring the issue to the attention of the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister. The organization also said it would take to the streets to defend the rights and security of journalists and media organizations.
Emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression, the AoJ maintained that journalists must be free to express their views on various issues through social media, as this is a fundamental right enjoyed by every citizen.
The organization observed that threats to a citizen’s life for expressing opinions were deeply disturbing and unacceptable. It expressed hope that the police would identify and arrest those allegedly responsible for threatening Manas Pal and take appropriate action against them in accordance with the law.
The statement was issued on behalf of the Assembly of Journalists by its member, Abhijit Ghosh.
