A discussion and exchange meeting titled “Journalism in the Current Context” held at the Agartala Press Club on Tuesday afternoon under the initiative of the Assembly of Journalists (AoJ), a collective organization of journalists and media workers.
The meeting discussed various problems of journalists in the changing situation, sense of professional responsibility, dignity and improvement of the profession and AoJ has organize this meeting with this aim so that the new generation of journalists can benefit from the experience of senior journalists, where senior journalists emphasized the importance of developing professional responsibility and ethical values in the media and among journalists.
At the event held at Agartala Press Club, senior journalists Shekhar Dutta, Sanit Debroy, Pranab Sarkar, and Jayanta Debnath shed light on the topic. Veteran journalists opined that enhancing efficiency is more critical for the media in the present scenario than professional security. Although no specific policies are in place for the media and journalists, self-imposed regulations have been effectively implemented in the country to maintain professional dignity and improve skills.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that maintaining the quality standards of the media and enhancing its social reputation require journalists to be more responsible and ethical on a personal level.
Seventy journalists, both senior and junior, participated in today’s event and advocated for the establishment of a more refined and structured environment at the individual level. Working journalists also called upon the Assembly of Journalists to explore ways to expand economic opportunities and increase government support for journalists.
Participants also stressed the importance of addressing issues such as improving salaries, benefits, and facilities for journalists with greater priority. The organizers and general secretary of AoJ, Sanit Debroy promised to hold similar discussions and exchange programs regularly, even on a smaller scale, to foster ongoing dialogue and development.
