A driver was assaulted and subjected to physical abuse at Dashamighat in Agartala during an idol immersion-related incident on Friday night, with the family accusing the secretary of a local club and several others of being involved in the attack.
According to the driver’s family, the victim, identified as Jalfu Miah, a resident of Charipara under AD Nagar police station, went to Dashamighat with his vehicle at around 10 pm on Friday to take part in an idol immersion. After the idol was unloaded from the vehicle, the driver allegedly hit a club secretary named Mithun accidentally while reversing the vehicle.
The situation reportedly turned tense following the incident. The family alleged that the driver was forced out of the vehicle and taken to the Dashamighat club premises, where several youths allegedly tied his hands and legs and assaulted him.
The family further alleged that the attackers took Rs 5,000 in cash and the driver’s mobile phone.
According to the family, the accused also allegedly pressured the driver to unlock his mobile phone. When he initially refused, he was allegedly assaulted again, resulting in a fracture to one of his hands. After he was allegedly forced to unlock the phone, the mobile device was taken away, the family claimed.
The family said the driver was found unconscious near the riverbank at around 2 AM and was rescued by police. He was initially taken to the IGM Hospital in Agartala. As his condition reportedly deteriorated, he was subsequently shifted to TMC Hospital and later to the GBP Hospital in Agartala.
Following the incident, the victim’s family approached West Agartala police station on Saturday and initiated the process of filing a complaint. They demanded legal action against those allegedly involved and a proper investigation into the incident. The family has also appealed to the Chief Minister for justice.
However, the allegations, the identities of those involved and the exact circumstances that led to the assault will become clear only after the police investigation. The response of the concerned club authorities to the allegations was not immediately available.
