Killer of mother & daughter held: Amarpur tense, police station gheraoed, tear gas cells fired
After a massive protest by local villagers in front of Birganj police station in Amarpur after a mastermind for the killing of a mother and her daughter arrested and agitated mob demanded to hand over both accused to the custody of villagers
Police dispersed the agitated mob , initially resorted to lathi charge on them and after the situation turned volatile, then police fired ten tear gas cells.
Sources said that on Tuesday afternoon villagers from the Tingharia area, under Ampinagar Police Station, surrounded the Birganj police station and demanded the handover of the alleged mastermind behind the brutal murder of a mother and daughter in Raishyabari.
The family members of the victims along with an angry crowd from the Tingharia area gheraoed the Birganj police station with demand to hand over the alleged mastermind behind the brutal murder.
Police personnel locked the outside gate of the police station and attempted to resist the mob. However, the mob breached the premises, mounting the police station board to voice their protests. In response, the police used a mild lathi charge to disperse them, but the situation escalated as bricks were hurled at the station. The ensuing clash turned into a mass police confrontation, leading the authorities to resort to firing ten tear gas shells to disperse the agitated crowd. Minor injuries were reported on both sides amidst escalating tension. After the clash, local shopkeepers shut their shops and people started escaping from the spot.
Despite the chaos, a group of protestors remained defiant, sitting in front of the main gate of Birganj police station. In response, the police closed the main gate and deployed TSR personnel. Subsequently, CRPF jawans were brought in to restore the law and order situation.
Amarpur SDPO Devanjali Roy, along with SDPO Gandacharra Bapi Debbarma, SDPO Karbook Gamanjoy Reang, and SDPO Ampinagar Tuhitan Tripura, accompanied by CRPF and TSR personnel, escorted mastermind Bijay Kumar Jamatia (52), an engineer in DWS office of Amarpur and his wife Chitrakanya Jamatia (46), two accused for killing the mother and the daughter to shift them into Raisyabari police station.
It may be recalled here that on October 26, the bodies of a housewife and her daughter were recovered from Dumbur lake. The victims, residents of Raishyabari, had gone missing from Ampinagar Tingharia. Police initiated an investigation led by the Bikan Jamatia, DSP of the Intelligent wing of Gomati district police, leading to the arrest of Bijay Kumar Jamatia and his wife on Monday night. Just after the information of arresting the main mastermind, angry villagers and their relatives of the victim's family reached Birganj police station and started protesting for the handover of the accused to them.
Till last report, the situation remained tense in Amarpur and additional forces were deployed to defuse the tension.
