Mahila Congress leaders meet Angel Chakma’s parents, demand CBI probe
The All India Mahila Congress on Tuesday strongly demanded an immediate Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma and sought transfer of the case to Delhi or Tripura to prevent any interference by the ruling party.
A delegation of the Mahila Congress, led by Lhingkim Haokip Kim, General Secretary (In-charge, Tripura), All India Mahila Congress, along with Tripura Mahila Congress president Smt. Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty and other leaders, met Angel Chakma’s parents in Agartala and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Ms. Lhingkim Haokip Kim described the murder as “not an accident, but the bloody outcome of the BJP government’s ideology of hate, division, and rioting politics.” She said that wherever the BJP governs, “fear replaces harmony, hatred replaces humanity, and violence becomes routine.”
Alleging systemic discrimination, Ms. Kim said the BJP has, for years, fostered suspicion, racism, and hostility against people from the Northeast. “Under BJP rule, students from the Northeast are abused, assaulted, and even murdered, while governments look the other way,” she alleged.
Criticizing the incident further, she said the BJP’s ideology of creating “insiders” and “outsiders” has turned Indians against one another. “Calling Northeastern citizens ‘Chinese’ or ‘Nepali,’ targeting them for their looks and identity, and treating them as second-class citizens is a direct result of hate-driven politics. Angel Chakma paid the ultimate price for this ideology,” she said.
The Mahila Congress leader also criticized the Uttarakhand government, claiming it had “miserably failed” to deliver justice. She alleged that the government’s refusal to immediately hand over the case to the CBI showed that the BJP was more interested in protecting its image than ensuring justice for the victim.
“Angel Chakma’s murder is another stain on BJP’s governance—a stain that cannot be washed away by slogans or propaganda,” Ms. Kim said. She reiterated demands for a CBI investigation, transfer of the case to Delhi or Tripura, strict punishment for all culprits, and an end to political shielding.
She further stated that Mahila Congress national president Smt. Alka Lamba stands firmly with Angel Chakma’s family. Ms. Kim added that the Mahila Congress would launch nationwide protests, pursue legal action, and expose what it described as the BJP’s “anti-Northeast, anti-student, and anti-human ideology” at every forum.
