A 45-year-old man was found dead by suicide at Madhya Ganaki village under Khowai police station on Monday morning, triggering grief among residents of the area.

The deceased has been identified as Munda Tanti alias Khokan (45), son of Surendra Tanti, a resident of the colony near the Tapur Tupur Anganwadi Centre in the Tabala Bari area under Madhya Ganaki Gram Panchayat of Khowai district.

According to local sources, Munda Tanti had been living with his two daughters after his wife allegedly left the family around one-and-a-half years ago. Residents claimed that following the separation, he had become mentally distressed and had largely withdrawn from social life.

Sources said the two daughters had gone to their maternal uncle's house on Sunday. On Monday morning, neighbours became suspicious after noticing that the door of his house remained closed for an unusually long time. Despite repeated calls, there was no response. They then looked through a window and found him hanging inside the house. Police were immediately informed.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the locality, with relatives and neighbours expressing shock and grief over the tragic death.

Local residents believe that prolonged emotional distress arising from his family circumstances may have contributed to the incident. However, the exact cause of death will be determined only after a police investigation and post-mortem examination.

Police have initiated an investigation into the case to ascertain the circumstances leading to the death.
