Massive protest in Tripura over gang raped, women paraded naked in violence hit Manipur
Tripura along with other parts of the country staged massive protest after a video showing two women being paraded naked after gang raped by a mob in the violence hit Manipur has also sparked outrage in different women bodies.
On Thursday evening, the opposition Congress organized a large candle-march in various thoroughfares of Agartala to show their protest against the barbaric incident in Manipur.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with the Opposition mounting pressure on the BJP-ruled Centre demanding a detailed discussion on the situation in Manipur. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the assault as “shameful” and called on state governments to ensure women’s safety. The Supreme Court, too, expressed “deep concern” and asked the state and Central governments to appraise it of the action taken to bring the perpetrators to book.
While, after the protest rally, senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman speaking with media persons said “What is happening is horrific and barbaric. One of the most horrific killings in post-Independent India is happening there and the BJP government has become a mute spectator. We were shocked to see the situation.”
Condemning the incident captured on video of two tribal women being paraded naked and molested in Manipur, Sudip said heartbroken and outraged to witness the horrific video from Manipur showing the brutal treatment of two women by a frenzied mob. No words can express the pain and anguish of witnessing the violence inflicted on marginalized women. This act of barbarism is beyond comprehension and humanity. We must stand united in condemning such inhumane actions by the miscreants and bring justice to the victims, said Roy Barman.
“All Indian hearts bleeding and we are ashamed, the statement made by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in which he claimed that it’s not a sporadic incident and many incidents are happening, that’s mean when the internet services will again resume in Manipur, then people will see many such barbaric incidents,” said Sudip.
For the first time ever, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning the incident, though he tried to politicize the incident with instances of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh states, the custodian of democracy, whos slogan was ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Parao’, said Roy Barman and claimed that total lawlessness prevails across Manipur and more than 200 crimes against women held in Manipur.
He also asked where the police and administration and the party in power should be accountable for these horrific situations. Sudip also alleged that after 77 days long violence, the Chief Minister is still trying to protect his seat and doing shameful acts to divide and spread hatred among communities.
Tipra-Motha’s former chairman and royal scion, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has also strongly condemned the incident and said that the Chief Minister must be accountable for this horrific incident. He said that time has come to speak about such incidents in the Northeast, which had never seen such a barbaric incident. The Tipra-Motha always stood with these victim women and also condemned the role of local politicians.
The leaders of Twipra Women Federation (TWF) addressing a press conference condemned the incident and sought intervention of President Droupadi Murmu to ensure safety of women in Manipur.
They said that the video has been taken down from social media after being forced by the government. But the fact is already so many people have witnessed the barbarism. Our heart is burning. Our heart is crying to see how the dignity of our mothers and daughters is being violated. What would the BJP leaders say now? What is their take on this incident? It is a shame for us. It is disgraceful.”
It may be recalled here that the gang rape of the women happened after the village was burnt down and two men - one middle-aged and another teenager - were beaten to death by the mob.
But the police complaint filed by a relative of one of the women said only one of them was gang raped. It added that a third woman had been forced to strip but she is not seen in the video.
Manipur police said that the incident took place on 4 May and that a case of abduction and gang rape and murder had been registered in Thoubal district.
