Massive victory for BJP, Dr Manik Saha to be new CM
Setting aside all speculation, the BJP returned to power with an absolute majority for the second consecutive term and the incumbent Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is all set to be the new Chief Minister for the second time as the party had gone for election with projecting him as the party’s Chief Minister face.
BJP returned to power by winning 32 seats while their alliance partners the IPFT won one seat. On the other hand the CPI(M)-Congress combine that was aspiring to capture power has ended with 11 and 3 seats respectively. The new sensation in state politics Tipra-Motha won 13 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also won in all three Northeastern states with the win in Tripura and Nagaland while forming a government in Meghalaya by renewing its alliance with Conrad Sangma.
On a victory note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Congratulations to Shri @JPNadda Ji, Tripura CM @DrManikSaha2, Shri @Rajib4BJP, and the karyakartas of @BJP4Tripura whose tireless efforts secured BJP's victory. It is evident again that for development and prosperity, BJP led by PM @narendramodi is people’s preference.”
In another tweet, PM Modi wrote: "Thank you Tripura! This is a vote for progress and stability. @BJP4Tripura will continue to boost the state's growth trajectory. I am proud of all Tripura BJP Karyakartas for their spectacular efforts at the grassroots."
The ruling BJP is all set to form government for the second consecutive term in Tripura as it has won 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The candidate of BJP ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) Sukla Charan Noatia won from Jolaibari seat in South Tripura. BJP candidates won in Amarpur, Kamalasagar, Mohanpur and Santir Bazar.
Counting of votes has been completed in 60 centres at 21 locations across the state.
The tribal-based Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which for the first time contested the Assembly election in 42 seats, won 13 seats followed by CPI(M) by winning 11 seats and Congress in three seats.
Tripura Chief Minister and BJP candidate Dr Manik Saha won the elections from Town Bardowali seat, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma contested from Charilam seat defeated by Tipra-Motha candidate Subodh Debbarma, Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik in Dhanpur seat, Rampada Jamatia in Bagma, Sushanta Chowdhury in Majlishpur, Ratan Chakraborty in Khayerpur, Surajit Datta in Ramnagar and Ram Prasad Paul in Surjyamaninagar has also won the elections.
The CPI(M) candidates managed to win in 11 seats, including Pratapgarh, Barjala, Bamutia, Belonia, Hrishamukh, Sabroom, Sonamura, Boxanagar, Khowai, Kadamtala-Kurti and Jubarajnagar.
Among the important CPI(M) candidates who won the elections are state party Secretary Jitendra Chowdhury (Sabroom seat), Sudip Sarkar (Barjala), Dipankar Sen (Belonia), Shyamal Chakraborty (Sonamura).
Congress, which contested the February 16 Assembly elections in seat sharing adjustments with the Left Front and managed to win from Agartala ,Banamalipur and Kailashahar seats.
The Congress candidates , who won the elections are Sudip Roy Barman in Agartala seat, Gopal Chandra Roy in Banamalipur seat and state Congress President Birajit Sinha in Kailashahar seat.
Among the important TMP candidates leading include Chitta Ranjan Debbarma (Ambassa seat), Pathan Lal Jamatia (Ampinagar), Animesh Debbarma (Asharambari) and Paul Dangshu (Karamchara).
Significantly, in the 2023 assembly opposition CPI(M) has lost some of their traditional bastion like Bishalgarh, where BJP candidate Sushanta Deb defeated CPI(M) candidate Partha Pratim Majumder by1,326 votes.BJP candidate Antara Sarkar Deb defeated CPI(M) candidate Hiranmay Narayan Debnath by 1744 votes, BJP candidate Minarani Sarkar defeated Forward Bloc candidate Partha Ranjan Sarkar from Badharghat constituency with 1289 votes.
Senior CPI(M) tribal leader Radhacharan Debbarma was defeated by Tipra-Motha candidate Swapna Debbarma by 21,649 votes from Mandwaibazar seat, sitting CPI(M) MLA Bijita Nath was defeated by Jadab Lal Debnath of BJP by 1461 votes from Bagbassa seat, BJP candidate Tinku Roy defeated Krishnendu Choudhury of CPI(M) by 577 votes from Chandipur seat.
Three CPI (M) sitting MLAs were also defeated by BJP candidates from the strong bastions like Manu, where BJP candidate Mailafru Mog won the polls by defeating Prabhat Chowdhury of CPI(M) with 547 votes, six time CPI() MLA Sudhan Das was defeated by BJP candidate Swapna Majumder by 1335 votes and Jitendra Majumder of BJP defeated senior CPI(M) leader Ratan Kumar Bhowmik by 5,051 votes from Kakrabon-Shalgarah seat.
In the February 16 elections to the 60 seat Tripura Assembly, 89.95 per cent of the 28.14 lakh voters exercised their franchise and will decide the fate of 259 candidates, including 31 women.
