Panchayat elections: Amidst sporadic violence, nomination filling picks up
Despite sporadic incidents of violence and intimidation, the opposition political parties continue the submission of their papers in most of the blocks in the state on the fourth and fifth days of filing nominations raising the hope that the Panchayat election in the state is not going to be a one-sided affair and number of uncontested seats is going to be reduced considerably compared to 2019 Panchayat elections. The CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury and the Tripura Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha reiterated their allegations regarding violence and attack on them but admitted that in many of the places they could file nominations. In many places police escorted the party leaders and candidates to the block offices. In some offices the filing of nomination continued till the evening. The BJP released the list of candidates they started filing nominations from Tuesday.
On Tuesday, BJP filed nomination papers for three-tier Panchayat elections in Suryamaninagar, Bamutia and Mohanpur assembly constituencies along with other parts of the state
TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha said they have informed their central leaders about the violence going on in the state and the General Secretary of the AICC Priyanka Gandhi has already expressed her concern over the situation in Tripura. A central team of the party is going to arrive here by Thursday for two days for on-the-spot study of the situation.
The INDIA partners are still alleging that in many places they could not file nomination due to attack. A delegation of CPI(M) led by Narayan Kart on Monday met the Director General of Police and demanded immediate action and arrest of persons involved in attack and violence.
The CPI(M) delegation during their deputation with DGP alleged that during all party meetings, opposition representatives were physically prevented by the ruling BJP followers in block premises in front of police and block authorities.
They alleged that ‘the violent and aggressive move of the ruling BJP for winning all the seats in all Panchayat uncontested has been intensified and as a result, Badal Shil, who submitted nomination for Zilla Parishad on July 11, was attacked mercilessly and succumbed to death on July 13 at GB Hospital’.’
CPI(M) delegation demanded to drive out any kind of gathering of any party, particularly the ruling BJP from inside the Block premises and all paths and roads leading to block up to 5 km from the block centre, escort the opposition candidates from particular places to the concerned RO offices and ensure their safe return after filing nomination and arrange protection of live and properties of opposition candidates and their proposers till the election ends etc.
