Prohibitory orders imposed in North Tripura’s Kadamtala after 'communal' clash

Once again state witnessed a communal tension following clashes over Durga Puja subscription  at Kadamtala block under North Tripura district and  the state administration taking a prompt action has  imposed prohibitory order of section-163 of BNSS with deployment of large number of security forces across all affected areas to defuse tension.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Dharmanagar, Sajal Debnath clamped the curbs under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita at Kadamtala till Wednesday (October 9) to restore normality.

“There was communal tension between two communities at Kadamtala over collection of Durga puja subscriptions on Sunday. Sensing trouble, police dispersed the mob,” Superintendent of Police (SP), North District, Bhanupada Chakraborty told reporters.

He said two houses were vandalised by the mob, and heavy police deployment was made to bring the situation under control. The SP added that  police will take legal action against those involved in the violence.

After the violent clash broke out in Kadamtala on Sunday, several people suffered injuries and property  damage. The incident which took place in an area adjacent to Kadamtala Block has highlighted the ongoing issue of forceful Durga Puja subscription  practices despite official prohibitions.

The conflict reportedly began when members of a local club named Indian Club demanded a hefty subscription of  Rs 5,000 from a vehicle carrying a patient. When the driver refused to pay the club members allegedly assaulted the vehicle's occupants, sparking action from local residents.

Eyewitnesses reported that the situation quickly escalated with both sides engaging in violence. Several homes and a beauty parlor were vandalized during the clash. Police had to resort to a mild baton charge to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the North Tripura District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty immediately reached to the location and told reporters, "We have taken swift action to de-escalate the situation. Three individuals, Nirmalendu Sen (88), Dipjoy Nath (26) and Haran Acharjee (20), have been arrested in connection with the incident."

He further stated, "No one is beyond the law, if someone is guilty, he will be punished as per the law."

Later, the police deployed a large contingent of security forces in the area as well as imposed prohibitory orders.
