In one of the biggest anti-narcotics operations in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Silchar, seized Yaba tablets worth an estimated ₹168 crore and arrested a suspected drug peddler during a joint operation in Assam's Cachar district.
The operation was carried out during the night of August 25–26 in the Jujhang Pahar area under Lakhipur in Cachar district. Security personnel recovered 5.60 lakh Yaba tablets weighing approximately 60 kg, with an estimated market value of around ₹168 crore. A Tata truck allegedly used to transport the contraband was also seized.
According to officials, the narcotics are suspected to have originated from neighbouring Manipur and were being transported along National Highway-37 towards Assam. Preliminary investigations suggest that the inter-state trafficking syndicate was using the Cachar and Sribhumi districts as transit corridors for smuggling the contraband to mainland India, indicating the extensive and organised nature of the network.
The arrested individual, along with the seized narcotics and the vehicle, has been handed over to the competent authorities for further investigation and legal action.
Officials described the seizure as a major blow to the inter-state narcotics syndicate, highlighting the effectiveness of coordinated operations between the Assam Rifles and the DRI. They reiterated the Assam Rifles' commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks, disrupting smuggling routes, and protecting the youth of the Northeast from the menace of narcotics.
