Severe floods devastate state's electricity system; Restoration efforts underway amidst challenges
The state’s electricity infrastructure has been severely damaged following catastrophic flooding. With engineers, officials, and staff from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) working tirelessly to restore power. Despite round-the-clock efforts, full restoration remains challenging, particularly in the South and Gomati districts, which have been hit hardest by the floods.
TSECL through a press statement said that in the South district, progress has been notable, with electricity re-established in 164 out of 195 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees across Sabroom, Santirbazar, and Belonia.
However, ongoing difficulties include areas without road connectivity and extensive water accumulation that makes it difficult to erect new electricity poles. Efforts are being focused on reconnecting the remaining 31 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees part, with support from both district and sub-divisional administrations.
In the Gomati district, power has been largely restored to Udaipur, though Amtali and Banduar in the Tepania area remain without service due to severe water logging. Additional complications have arisen in Shalagra Beri, Rajdhar Nagar, and Fakirbari where water accumulation continues to obstruct restoration efforts. Most of Udaipur division has regained power except for Purba Mirza Switchgate Para, Radha Banshi Para, and Chhota Gangrai, where service remains interrupted.
The Amarpur division has faced the most severe impacts, with extensive water logging and fallen trees hampering restoration. Despite these obstacles, TSECL workers have successfully reactivated power in many areas. The corporation is in ongoing communication with the Gomati District and Amarpur Sub-Divisional Administrations to expedite service restoration in the affected regions.
As the state battles the aftermath of these unprecedented floods, TSECL remains committed to overcoming the challenges and restoring electricity as swiftly as possible, with continued cooperation from local authorities essential for progress.
