Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on the first day of Monsoon session of the Assembly on Thursday said that the state government is making all-out efforts to uncover the truth behind the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, assuring that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in any wrongdoing.

Making a statement on the opening day of the Assembly, Dr Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that the state police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of the senior IPS officer.

The Chief Minister said the probe is being closely monitored by the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak. He added that the investigating team has already visited Delhi as part of the inquiry.

Dr Saha informed the House that the investigation team would examine post-mortem and forensic reports, digital evidence, mobile call records, electronic devices, CCTV footage, official documents and other relevant materials to determine the circumstances leading to the DGP’s death.

“If anyone is found to have committed any illegal act in connection with the DGP’s death, strict action will be taken as per law,” Dr Saha said.

He also appealed to all sections of society to refrain from speculation on the sensitive issue until the investigation is completed.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Thursday over the death of the state police chief, with opposition CPI (M) and Congress members alleging that the government was not allowing a discussion on the matter.

He assumed charge as Tripura DGP on May 17, 2025. Prior to becoming the state police chief, he served as the Director General of Police (Intelligence) in Tripura.

Following the incident, acting DGP G.S. Rao on July 24 constituted a three-member team headed by West Tripura district Superintendent of Police (SP) Namit Pathak to investigate the “mysterious” death.

Later, SP Pathak reconstituted the probe team with 10 members under his leadership. The team includes Additional SP (Urban), West Tripura, Dhruba Nath; Crime Branch Additional SP Souvik De; officers-in-charge of Cyber Crime Police Station, Amtali Police Station and West Agartala Women Police Station; in-charges of Battala and Ramnagar police outposts; an Inspector of KTD Singh Police Training Academy; and the previous investigating officer Subhojit Deb.

Opposition parties, including Congress, CPI(M), CPI and others, have been demanding a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ascertain the circumstances and reasons behind the death of the senior-most IPS officer of the state.

The Left parties and Congress had earlier organized separate protest rallies across Tripura, pressing for a High Court-monitored judicial investigation into the incident.

Anurag’s tenure as Tripura Director General of Police was scheduled to continue until May 17, 2027.
