In a major initiative to enhance cyber security preparedness across states and Union Territories, the Tripura government on Tuesday organized a state-level workshop titled "Strengthening Cyber Security Framework for State Data" at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala. The workshop was inaugurated by Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha and brought together senior government officials, cyber security experts, and representatives from technology organisations.
The programme was jointly organized by the State IT Department and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Director General of Police Anurag, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests R.K. Samal, Director of the IT Department Jaya Ragul Geshon B., senior officials from various departments, and representatives of NeGD participated in the workshop, which highlighted Tripura's progress towards achieving the goals of the Digital India mission.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha expressed concern over the rapid rise in cyber fraud cases with the expansion of digital technology. He said nearly every family or institution is vulnerable to cybercrime and warned against scams involving fake WhatsApp messages citing medical emergencies to extort money. He urged citizens to verify information before making financial transactions and stressed that cyber security has become a matter of national importance, requiring greater public awareness and vigilance.
Director General of Police Anurag said cybercrime has become increasingly sophisticated and technology-driven, making investigations more challenging. He revealed that cyber frauds amounting to Rs 83 crore have been reported in Tripura over the past four years. Of this, Rs 15.43 crore was frozen through timely intervention, while Rs 1.23 crore was successfully returned to victims. He appealed to the public to remain alert against evolving cyber threats.
