Barely 24 hours after police seized narcotic substances worth nearly Rs 40 lakh in Kumarghat town under Unakoti district, police carried out another major anti-drug operation, recovering banned Phensedyl cough syrup worth approximately Rs 10 lakh from the Chini Bagan Naka point in the district headquarters, Kailashahar.
The operation came shortly after local journalists had submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, Unakoti, urging the district police to intensify anti-drug enforcement. The latest seizure is being viewed as the first major Phensedyl haul of its kind from the Chini Bagan checkpoint.
During the operation, police also seized a luxury vehicle allegedly used for smuggling and detained two suspected drug traffickers from the Shinathpur area of Kailashahar.
According to local sources, the arrested suspects had allegedly been involved in drug trafficking across Unakoti district for a long time. The sources further alleged that the illegal trade had flourished under the patronage of certain influential political leaders. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and the police have not made any official statement linking any political figures to the case.
Residents of the Chini Bagan area welcomed the seizure but questioned why the alleged smuggling route had remained active for such a long period. They claimed that Phensedyl, drugs, Burmese cigarettes and other contraband had reportedly been transported through the same route for years. Many locals said that while the latest operation was a positive step, they were unwilling to hail it as a major success unless sustained action is taken to dismantle the entire smuggling network.
