Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who is the country's first openly gay female parliamentarian, on Sunday (March 17, 2024) announced she has married her partner Sophie Allouache.
Wong wrote on Instagram: "We are delighted that so many of our family and friends could share this special day with us."
She also shared an image on the social media platform where Wong and Allouache could be seen posing together in wedding attire and holding a bouquet.
The marriage took place at the Bird in Hand winery at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills on Saturday (March 16, 2024), reported Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Australian PM Anthony Albanese and his fiancee Jodie Haydon joined a number of Labour colleagues in attending the marriage.
The couple's daughters, 12-year-old Alexandra and eight-year-old Hannah, were flower girls, ABC reported.
Penny Wong reportedly met Allouache in 2007.
Australian politicians congratulate the couple
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas did not attend the wedding but wished the couple as quoted by ABC: "I'm happy for them and I hope they had a thoroughly enjoyable day."
Congratulating the couple, opposition Senate leader Simon Birmingham posted on Facebook: "Many congratulations to Penny & Sophie, their daughters Alexandra & Hannah, as well as all of their family & friends. May their commitment to one another see them enjoy a lifetime together filled with love & happiness, along with additional strength in times of adversity."
Same-sex marriage became legal in the country in 2017.
Homosexuality was not decriminalized in several states across the country till 1997.
