China estimated to have reported 37 million Covid-19 cases in a single day this week: Report
Beijing: China may have registered 37 million coronavirus cases in this week, making it the highest daily recorded so far, Bloomberg reported citing an estimate from the government's top health authority.
According to the report at least 248 million people in China are likely infected in the new coronavirus wave in the country.
The Bloomberg report quotes minutes from an internal meeting of China’s National Health Commission held on Wednesday.
On December 20, a whopping 37 million infections were recorded, Bloomberg reported.
This figure is a huge deviation, from the official number that said 3,049 cases were recorded on that day.
If the estimated single-day record of 37 million cases is correct it would be a massive jump over the 4 million cases reported in January 2022.
The huge spike in cases comes after China made a sudden shift from its Zero Covid policy that imposed strict lockdowns to completely easing restrictions.
Experts opine that easing virus prevention measures amid rising Covid cases could come with big risks.
Further, China has been administering domestically produced vaccines which some studies have suggested are not as effective as some foreign ones, the Reuters report said.
The country has not approved any foreign Covid vaccines.
