China tells US to play 'positive and accountable role' in Israel-Gaza situation
Washington/Beijing: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the Israel-Hamas situation and sought China’s help in preventing the conflict from spreading to other Middle Eastern nations, BBC reported.
Wang told Blinken that Washington should adopt a “positive and accountable role”.
He stated that in dealing with global hotspot issues, major nations should uphold objectivity and impartiality, exercise calmness and restraint, and set an example by adhering to international law.
"When dealing with international hot-spot issues, major countries must adhere to objectivity and fairness, maintain calmness and restraint, and take the lead in abiding by international law," said Wang, according to the report.
Wang also mentioned that Beijing has proposed convening an "international peace meeting" at the earliest opportunity.
China's official statements on the conflict have refrained from explicitly naming Hamas in their condemnation of violence.
Instead, it has urged an immediate ceasefire, denounced the indiscriminate use of force, and called for an end to the “collective punishment of the people in Gaza”.
