Iran: Nine convicted ISIS members executed
Iran has executed nine members of the terror group Islamic State on Tuesday, media reports said.
They were arrested in 2018.
The case, charged with waging war through armed rebellion and possession of military weapons, was referred to the Tehran Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office. After investigations and the issuance of an indictment, it was sent to court, reported Mizan Online.
Following trial sessions attended by the defendants and their lawyers, the court, based on the case’s evidence, confessions, and the defendants’ actions—including carrying weapons, engaging in combat with IRGC forces, and martyring three Najaf Base fighters—sentenced the nine ISIS members to death, the Iranian news portal reported.
They were executed by hanging after the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.
The ISIS group once controlled a large area in Iraq and Syria before it was significantly weakened in US-led campaigns.
The group has continued carrying out sporadic attacks in many nations over the years.
As per the UN website, at least 901 people were reportedly executed in 2024, including some 40 in one week alone in December.
At least 853 people were executed in 2023.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk had said he was deeply troubled by the marked increase in executions in Iran last year.
“It is deeply disturbing that yet again we see an increase in the number of people subjected to the death penalty in Iran year-on-year,” said Türk. “It is high time Iran stemmed this ever-swelling tide of executions.”
