She has become the first female leader of Japan’s long-governing conservative Liberal Democratic Party.

Takaichi defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of the popular former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, in a runoff intraparty vote by the LDP on Saturday, according to CNN.

She will replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The new LDP head's tenure will last till 2027.

Saturday’s vote only involved 295 LDP parliamentarians and about 1 million dues-paying members. It only reflected 1 per cent of the Japanese public, reported CNN.

The Parliamentary vote in the country is expected to take place mid-October.

Shigeru Ishiba, whose tenure lasted just a little over a year, last month announced his decision to step down after a series of election defeats that saw the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) governing coalition lose its majority in both chambers of parliament.
