Pakistan Army soldiers mercilessly beat up cop

By IBNS
Apr 13, 2024..

Eid-ul-Fitr, a time of joyous celebration marking the end of Ramadan, was marred by violence in Pakistan’s Punjab province, as a clash erupted between army personnel and police officers. The shocking incident, captured on a now-viral video, has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about the rule of law in the country.

The disturbing footage depicts Pakistan army personnel forcibly entering the Bahawalnagar police station, unleashing a wave of chaos and violence. They ransacked the premises, assaulted police officers, and inflicted brutal beatings using rifle butts and lathis. The station house officer was reportedly subjected to torture in the ordeal.

The confrontation unfolded on the morning of April 10th, shortly after Eid prayers, when a convoy of army vehicles descended upon the police station. The catalyst for this violent altercation stemmed from a prior incident where Punjab police officers had taken action against an individual accused of looting, only to discover that the perpetrator was a relative of an army officer.

In the aftermath of the clash, voices of dismay and disbelief reverberated across Pakistan. A police officer, his voice tinged with desperation, questioned the very essence of the nation’s ideals, lamenting, “Is this Pakistan? Where is our CM Sahiba (Maryam Nawaz)? Will the people whom we protect raise their voices for us?”

While senior police officials sought to downplay the severity of the incident, dismissing it as a routine occurrence, the gravity of the situation was not lost on the public. The viral video has ignited a firestorm of debate, with citizens expressing concerns over the apparent impunity enjoyed by the military and the erosion of the rule of law.

Political figures, including members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have weighed in on the matter, condemning the clash as a manifestation of systemic dysfunction within the state. Raoof Hussain, a PTI member, decried the incident as evidence of a “malady” afflicting Pakistani society, warning of the ominous specter of widespread anarchy.

Former Pakistan senate member Afrasiab Khattak echoed these sentiments, questioning whether the fundamental principles of justice and accountability still hold sway in the country. He cautioned against the dangerous trajectory of a state that succumbs to brute force and the “lashkarisation” of its institutions.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this harrowing clash, it stands at a crossroads, facing a critical juncture in its quest for justice, accountability, and the rule of law. The events in Bahawalnagar serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead and the urgent need for concerted efforts to uphold the principles upon which the nation was founded.
