Tibetan Youth Congress members protest outside Chinese Embassy in New Delhi over Buddhist leader's death

Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) members recently demonstrated outside the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi over the suspicious death of prominent Buddhist leader Tulku Hungkar Dorje under Chinese custody in Vietnam.
In an X post, TYC said: "Tibetan Youth Congress activists protested outside the Chinese Embassy, urging international pressure on Chinese and Vietnamese authorities for a transparent probe into Tulku Hungkar Dorje's detention and death. Demanding his body be returned to his monastery and family."

Prior to the protest, the activists visited the Vietnamese Embassy where they met with officials and submitted a petition demanding an international inquiry, the return of Rinpoche’s remains to his monastery and family, and the public disclosure of all findings, Phayul reported.
A similar protest was also held in London, where the community members held a candlelight vigil opposite the Chinese Embassy.
A candlelight vigil was also held in the north Indian city of Dharamshala.
The Central Tibetan Administration on Monday alleged thatTulku Hungkar Dorje, the throne holder of Lungngon monastery in Gade County, Golog, in Tibet’s province of Amdo, has died after he went missing for several days.
Sources told CTA website that Chinese officials have notified senior religious figures at Lungngon Monastery of his death on 2 April 2025 but have refused to return his body or provide details about the circumstances of his death.
Tulku Hungkar Dorje was reportedly detained by Chinese authorities in 2024.
In August 2024, Chinese officials claimed he had “gone missing” shortly after he gave a public teaching on 21 July 2024, the news website said.
Sources told CTA that Chinese authorities targeted Tulku Hungkar Dorje on fabricated charges after he declined to arrange an elaborate reception for the Chinese government-appointed Panchen Lama during his visit to the Golog region.
The death of a well-respected Tibetan religious figure follows a disturbing pattern of Chinese authorities targeting influential Tibetan figures who promote Tibetan culture, language, and identity. The detention, torture, and killing of respected leaders like Tulku Hungkar Dorje is a deliberate strategy to silence those who advocate for Tibetans’ fundamental rights, the news portal reported.
Tulku Hungkar Dorje is known for his extensive humanitarian and educational efforts in the Tibetan region.
