Women's rights not on priority list, matter to be dealt with as per Islamic laws: Taliban

Kabul: Taliban has made it clear easing restrictions on women, including ban from universities and working in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), is not on the list of its priorities, reported Khaama Press.

On Saturday, a Taliban spokesperson said the Islamist group would not permit any act that violates Islamic law, adding that the concerns over restrictions on women's rights will be dealt with in accordance with its established rule in Afghanistan.

Taliban chief spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement, "The Islamic Emirate tries to regulate all matters in accordance with the Islamic Sharia, and the ruling government cannot allow act against the Sharia in the country," reported Khaama Press.

The recent ban on women has elicited sharp responses from female university students and women activists in several parts of the country.

Globally, countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), OIC, and other international aid organisations, strongly condemned the ban.

They urged the Taliban caretaker government to remove the ban and allow Afghan girls and women to pursue their education and employment with NGOs, Khaama Press reported.
