Bordoloi joined the ruling party in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who welcomed the move, saying it would “strengthen our party”.

“We now feel more confident in collectively translating the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Assam of Narendra Modi into reality,” Sarma said.

The development comes just a month after former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah switched to the BJP after serving the grand old party for nearly three decades, signalling growing churn within the Congress in the state.

The Congress currently has three Lok Sabha MPs from Assam — state president Gaurav Gogoi (Jorhat), Rakibul Hussain (Dhubri), and Bordoloi, whose exit is seen as a setback for the party.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bordoloi’s close aide and senior Congress leader Nabajyoti Talukdar had resigned from the party a day earlier.

The political realignment comes ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, where the BJP is seeking its third straight term.
