'Avoid non-essential travels': India issues advisory amid ongoing violence in Myanmar, asks nationals to register at embassy

New Delhi/IBNS: Amid a surge in violence in Myanmar, India Tuesday released an advisory asking citizens to refrain from visiting the conflict-hit country.

The Ministry of External Affairs also advised Indians living in the war zone to fill out a form, detailing their names and other necessary details.

"In view of the evolving security situation in Myanmar, all Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel. Those already living in Myanmar are advised to take precautions and avoid travel to the regions affected by violence," it said.

India last week raised concern over the ongoing situation in Myanmar, with rebels seeking to control the border with India in Mizoram, and sought a resolution through "constructive dialogue".

Addressing the weekly press conference, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "India is concerned with such incidents close to the border, and New Delhi's position on the ongoing situation in Myanmar is clear."

Bagchi said India wants cessation of the violence and resolution of the situation through constructive dialogue and calls for the return of peace, stability, and democracy in Myanmar.

"Since the current conflict started, a large number of Myanmar citizens have been taking refuge in India and the local authorities in the concerned neighboring states have been handling the situation appropriately on humanitarian grounds," he had said.

"India has also been facilitating the return of those who wish to go back to that country," he added.

A civil war has been raging in Myanmar following a military coup in February 2021. The fighting between the country’s Army and pro-democracy groups intensified close to the Mizoram border a few days ago.
