Two vehicle thieves were apprehended by local residents and later handed over to the police in Tripura’s Bishalgarh on Friday.
Police sources said that the incident took place in the North Brajpur area under Bishalgarh police station when the two men, identified as Bikash Debnath and Suman Debnath, allegedly attempted to flee after stealing a water pump and a three-wheeler cargo auto-rickshaw.
Residents reportedly intercepted the duo while they were escaping. An angry crowd allegedly assaulted them before handing them over to the police.
Police took both suspects into custody and brought them to Bishalgarh police station for questioning. They are currently being interrogated as part of the investigation.
Local residents said they hope the police will take effective steps to curb the recurring incidents of theft in the Bishalgarh area.
Police added that they have registered a specific case against two arrested thieves and started an investigation.
